De benaming van Kerstmis verschilde in de Middeleeuwen nogal: volgens het Etymologisch Woordenboek zeiden we in bijvoorbeeld Kerstdach (kerstdag) als we over het feest spraken. Het woord 'Kerstmis' betekent eigenlijk 'Christus-mis', omdat dit feest gewijd is aan de geboorte van Jezus die de Christus, de Messias (de gezalfde van God) wordt genoemd. Het woord 'kerst' is uit het woord christus ontstaan; zo betekent "kerstenen" bijvoorbeeld "christianisatie", mensen, al dan niet uit hun vrije wil, bekeren tot het christendom.
